Barry Rafe



Barry is an experienced financial services professional with experience as a director, CEO and consultant to significant financial services firms and superannuation funds.

Barry provides strategic business advice to financial services businesses and large superannuation funds on issues such as product development, long range business planning and board governance. He also presents on professionalism to new actuaries, financial planner groups and other professions.

Barry is a Fellow of the Actuaries Institute, a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and has a Masters of Research in Philosophy from Macquarie University. Barry presents courses on board governance for the Australian Institute of Company Directors and has written their course on superannuation fund governance. Barry is currently a director of the Actuaries Institute, Greenpeace Australia Pacific and a small research startup business

Rafe Consulting was established in 2010 specifically to help individuals and organisations answer Socrates’ questions “What ought one to do”.


Barry has served on a number of for-profit and not-for-profit boards. He is currently a director of the Actuaries Institute, Greenpeace Australia Pacific  and a small research start-up company. He has chaired the Living Room Theatre and the Actuaries Institute. He was an executive director of a number of subsidiaries of large international financial services businesses. He has also been a director and treasurer of the Responsible Investment Association of Australasia and a past director of ASFA, the superannuation industry representational body.

Barry has held senior consulting positions as a strategy partner at Accenture and head of the financial services practice at Trowbridge Consulting. He was a senior manager with AMP and the CEO of Mellon Bank’s Australian operations.

Barry also facilitates major conferences and has MC’ed various events. He has honed his skills as an MC on the stand-up-comedy stage. He has presented at various comedy clubs in Sydney and has competed in and won various rounds in the national Raw Comedy event. Barry has received acting, presentation and comedy training through the National Institute for the Dramatic Arts.

Barry is currently studying for a PhD in philosophy at Macquarie University
